Pillar of Fire - The Galactic core rising over Lake Tekapo on last weekends Dark Skies Of Wonder workshop. Each one of those many millions of points of light is an unimaginably large ball of nuclear fire. Its staggering to think - what you can see here is just a tiny fraction of the stars in our own Milky Way. Our sun is pretty unremarkable as stars go, not very big. Yet the light we are greeted with every morning, those photons have been created deep within the core through nuclear fusion, those photons can take up to a million years to escape the surface to warm our face at the dawn. A million year journey to light your day! via 500px http://ift.tt/1y1vmFo
